Handa Isle by sea kayak. Handa is a small island which sits off the north west highlands of Scotland. Originally this island supported a small community, how ever now it lies uninhabited.

Taken on by the Scottish wildlife trust this island remains home to large number of bird life including guillemots and razorbills. Occasionally puffins can be seen at the right time of year.

Setting off from Scourie I made my way over the a white sandy beach with a fantastic view over to the Old Man of Stoer, another must see. With many caves and arches to explore the west side of Handa has much to offer the sea kayaker. Unfortunely the weather proved too strong for me to do much exploring on this particular trip but I enjoyed sitting out at sea watching the bird life and mesmerised by the waves hitting the rocks producing large standing waves known as clapotis.

Gaining in confidence I was loured into a cave on the northerly side only to immediately regret my decision and run away. Having lunch in Tarbert bay gave me a great view down the sound on handa which was my destination following a quick bit to eat.

Returning to Scourie and making the rather longer walk back to the car, tide times had left me high and dry, I was struck by the stillness of the place and vowed to make it back to explore the cave on a calmer day.
