Arisaig Sea Kayaking Centre is a fabulous setting to start a trip to the small isles.

Mike was kind enough to invite me along to run a 5 day trip out to Eigg and Rhum.

The forecast was for gale force wind on the saturday so we spent the morning usefully planning our route working out tides and flow. The afternoon saw a decrease in the wind and an opportunity for us to make our way out onto the water. Skills on paddling in the wind were tested and refined ready for what the weather was going to throw at us for the rest of the week.

Sunday allowed us to make the crossing to Eigg in peace and tranquility. We saw dolphins and large colonies of Manx Shearwater. Making our way to the north end to find a good camp we marveled at the size of the cliffs. I was even lucky enough to spot an otter swimming away from me with it’s catch in hand.

Monday the wind picked up once more but in the right direction taking us swiftly across to Rhum and a comfy night in Dibile bothy. Sheltering from the rain we were glad we had a roof over our heads.

Tuesday we choice the hind from the wind on the eastern side of Rhum which gave us time to explore the caves and rock pools around the southern end. Featuring some fantastic waterfalls which fall straight into the sea. We also came across a Geology undergraduate student who was 5 weeks into his 7 week field study into the geology of Rhum. He was a very interesting chap and being the only person we had come across for 2 days a welcome sight.

Wednesday and home time had arrived all too soon. The wind had picked up over night and so we opted to take the ferry back across to Mallaig.

A fantastic trip which I would highly recommend.
